Saltspring Wild Harmony
Artist: Krista Cutlan
Year: 2026
Medium: Handcrafted Merino wool felted flowers, wire armatures, custom textured vase
This timeless arrangement immortalizes the vibrant spring meadows of Saltspring Island, BC, with meticulously felted replicas of native Camas (Camassia quamash) and Sea Blush (Plectritis congesta). The striking blue-purple star-like blooms of Camas rise elegantly alongside the soft, powder-puff pink clusters of Sea Blush, capturing the delicate interplay of these iconic Gulf Islands wildflowers that carpet Garry oak meadows and coastal bluffs in a burst of seasonal color.
Handcrafted from sustainable Merino wool, each petal and leaf is shaped with precision to preserve the ephemeral beauty of fresh blooms—forever unfading and wilt-free. These species hold deep cultural and ecological significance in the Pacific Northwest: Camas, a traditional food source for Indigenous peoples, with its edible bulbs and vivid blue-violet flowers; and Sea Blush, an early-spring annual that paints hillsides in gentle pink hues while supporting pollinators.
This piece embodies serene coastal elegance—where wild heritage meets artistic permanence.
